1874‐1949 Uruguayan painter. Born in Montevideo to a Catalan father, he was educated in Barcelona, where he opened a studio. By the age of 40, he was a central figure in Barcelona's cultural scene, working on book illustrations, decorating churches, collaborating with Gaudi on his work, and running an experimental art school for children. He lived in Paris from 1910 to 1932. Inspired by his interactions with Mondrian and other avant-garde painters of the time, he studied various painting styles, and produced over 1,500 works during this period. He returned to Uruguay in 1932 and established the Constructivist Art Association and a studio, held numerous lectures and solo exhibitions, and left behind five books and numerous murals, working hard to enlighten the La Plata region, which was a backward area for art.
