Mr. Okubo

Japanese: 大久保氏 - おおくぼうじ
Mr. Okubo

The name of a Fudai Daimyo (feudal lord) and Hatamoto (shogun) in the Edo period. According to the family tree, they are descended from Fujiwara no Michikane and a branch of the Utsunomiya clan of Shimotsuke. They first went by the name of Utsunomiya or Utsu, but changed their name to Okubo during the time of Tadatoshi, who served Matsudaira Kiyoyasu, the grandfather of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Their relationship with the Tokugawa clan began after they became vassals of Matsudaira Nobumitsu, and they are considered Iwazu Fudai. For generations, they lived in the area around Kamiwada-go in Mikawa (Aichi Prefecture), and during the Mikawa Ikko Ikki uprising, the entire clan sided with Ieyasu. The main branch of the Okubo clan did not become a daimyo, but ended up as hatamoto, but three daimyo families came from the line of Tadashige's third son, Tadakazu. (1) is the Okubo clan of Odawara Domain, descended from Tadayo, who was a subordinate general of Ieyasu during the Tokugawa clan's period of possession of five provinces, and his son Tadachika, who became a powerful man during the Hidetada era but later fell from grace. At first, they received 45,000 koku of rice, but after Tadachika's fall, they were restored to 103,000 koku under Tadatomo. After that, they also held important positions in the shogunate. (2) is the Okubo clan of Karasuyama Domain in Shimotsuke Province, descended from Tadakane. (3) is the Okubo clan of Ogino Yamanaka Domain in Sagami Province, a branch of the Okubo clan of Odawara Domain. Both families were members of the shogunate, such as senior councilors and young councilors. Okubo Hikozaemon (Tadataka), famous for his storytelling, was Tadachika's uncle.
