Karayuki

Japanese: からゆき

A general term for women who, from the early Meiji period to the early Showa period, were taken by prostitution operators from northern and western Kyushu (especially Amakusa Island and the Shimabara Peninsula) and sent overseas as prostitutes. The character "Tangxing" is used for the term. The poor sold their daughters in exchange for loans in advance or on the promise of a profit, and with the prosperity of brothels as Japan expanded into the continent, the practice spread to Korea, Manchuria, China, Southeast Asia, and even America and Africa. According to the autobiography of pimp Muraoka Iheiji, he handled 3,200 prostitutes in Singapore between 1889 and 1894, but the total number is unknown.

明治初期から昭和の初めまで九州北，西部地方(特に天草島，島原半島)から売春業者の手を経て海外に売春婦として流出した女性の総称。〈唐行〉の字があてられる。貧困層が前借あるいは儲け話にのって娘を売り，日本の大陸進出にともなう娼楼の繁盛を背景として朝鮮，満州，中国，東南アジア，さらにアメリカ，アフリカへとひろがった。女衒（ぜげん）の村岡伊平治の自伝によれば，1889‐94年に扱ったシンガポールの娼妓の数は3200人とあるが，総数は不明。
