An upscale residential city in the Midwest of California, USA. Population: 56,000 (1990). Founded in 1891 when Stanford University was opened by AL Stanford, the city had a Southern Pacific Railroad station. The city's name means "tall tree" in Spanish, referring to the redwood tree that stands at the northwestern edge of the town.
