Rui-zong; Jui-tsung
[Raw] Ryusaku 2 (662)
[Died] Kaiyuan 4 (716)
The fifth and seventh emperor of the Tang dynasty of China (reigned 684-690, 710-712). Eighth son of the third emperor, Gaozong. His mother was Empress Wu Zetian. He ascended to the throne in 684 when Zhongzong was dethroned, but six years after Wu took power, she abolished the name of the country and changed it to Zhou, dethroned the emperor, and made him the heir to the throne. He was later restored to the throne by the efforts of Linzi King Li Longji (later Xuanzong of Tang), who had defeated Empress Wei, who had poisoned the restored Zhongzong (→Wuwei's Disaster). He abdicated the throne to Longji after three years on the throne, and died four years later. He was buried in Qiaoling (Fengshan Mountain, northeast of Pucheng County, Shaanxi Province).
