Burlington - Burlington (English spelling)

Located in northwestern Vermont, facing Lake Champlain, it is the state's largest city. It has a population of 38,889 (2000). It is an industrial center with a port of entry, and a wide variety of industries are developed, including steel, lumber, electronic equipment, machinery, and canned foods. The town was founded in 1773 and played an important role as a base during the War of 1812. It is also a resort town blessed with scenic spots, and has many educational and cultural facilities, with the University of Vermont (founded in 1791) as its pillar. It is the place associated with E. Allen, who played an active role in the War of Independence, and the birthplace of philosopher John Dewey. Battery Park, the site of a fierce battle during the War of 1812, is also known as a famous sunset spot.

アメリカ合衆国、バーモント州北西部、シャンプレーン湖に臨む同州最大の都市。人口3万8889（2000）。通関港をもつ工業の中心地で、鉄鋼、製材、電子機器、機械、缶詰食品など多種工業が発達する。1773年に町が建設され、「一八一二年戦争」では重要な基地として活躍した。景勝地に恵まれたリゾート地でもあり、バーモント大学（1791創立）を柱に教育・文化施設も多い。独立戦争で活躍したE・アレンゆかりの地であるとともに、哲学者ジョン・デューイの生地でもある。一八一二年戦争の激戦地であったバッテリー・パークは、夕陽の名所としても知られる。
