Located in northwestern Vermont, facing Lake Champlain, it is the state's largest city. It has a population of 38,889 (2000). It is an industrial center with a port of entry, and a wide variety of industries are developed, including steel, lumber, electronic equipment, machinery, and canned foods. The town was founded in 1773 and played an important role as a base during the War of 1812. It is also a resort town blessed with scenic spots, and has many educational and cultural facilities, with the University of Vermont (founded in 1791) as its pillar. It is the place associated with E. Allen, who played an active role in the War of Independence, and the birthplace of philosopher John Dewey.
