...This species is the most adapted to terrestrial life, and both its English and Japanese names were given to it because it runs on the ground to catch prey such as lizards. The Great Roadrunner Geococcyx californianus (illustration), which is about 60 cm long, is found from the southwestern United States to Mexico, while the Lesser Roadrunner G. velox , which is about 50 cm long, is found from southern Mexico to Central America. Both species have gray-brown plumage with white and black spots on the upper side and white bellies.
