Illustrated Guide to Famous Places in Owari

...Inspired by Yoshinoya Tamehachi's plan and its success, other bookstores followed suit and published works such as "Illustrated Guide to Famous Places along the Tokaido," "Illustrated Guide to Famous Places along the Kiso Route," "Illustrated Guide to Famous Places along the Ise Pilgrimage," "Illustrated Guide to Famous Places along the Konpira Pilgrimage," "Illustrated Guide to Famous Places along the Twenty-Four Pilgrimages," and even "Illustrated Guide to Famous Places along the Chinese Peninsula," and even works that were unrelated to geography, such as "Illustrated Guide to Famous Places along the Mountains and Seas." The popularity of illustrated guides continued into the Bunka era (1804-18), and several illustrated guides that aimed to further improve on the content were produced outside of Kyoto and Osaka, such as "Illustrated Guide to Famous Places along the Edo Route" and "Illustrated Guide to Famous Places along the Owari Route." Among them, "Illustrated Guide to Famous Places of Edo," published during the Tenpo era (1830-44), took more than 30 years to complete over three generations of Saito Choshu, Kansai, and Getsushin, and its illustrations were done by Hasegawa Settan. It is considered the greatest masterpiece among the "Illustrated Guide to Famous Places of Edo."

…こうした吉野屋為八の企画とその成功に刺激されて，他の書店もこれにならって《東海道名所図会》《木曾路名所図会》《伊勢参宮名所図会》《金毘羅参詣名所図会》《二十四輩名所図会》のほか，ひいては《唐土名勝図会》などというものまでも出版され，また，地誌とは離れた《山海名産図会》その他のものまで作られるにいたった。名所図会の流行は文化年間(1804‐18)に及び，さらにその後京坂以外の土地でも，《江戸名所図会》《尾張名所図会》などその内容にいっそうの整備を志したいくつかの図会が作られた。なかでも天保年間(1830‐44)に刊行された《江戸名所図会》などは，斎藤長秋，莞斎，月岑（げつしん）と3代30年余を経てようやく完成をみたもので，挿絵は長谷川雪旦の手に成り，〈名所図会〉中の第一の傑作に推されている。…
