House of Anjou

A count family that ruled the Anjou region in western France from the 10th century onwards. The House of Anjou was powerful from the middle reaches of the Mayenne and Sarthe rivers, which flow from the north into the lower Loire, to the south bank of the Loire. The family's base was in Angers. In the first half of the 11th century, under Fulk Nerlat (meaning Black Fulk), they expanded their influence to Touraine in the east, and in the early 12th century, they annexed the County of Maine in the north. Thus, in the 12th century, the House of Anjou was a powerful force confronting the counts of Normandy to the north, Poitou to the south, Blois to the east, and Brittany to the west. The Capetian royal family of France was still weak, and it was a time when the alliances and alliances of these counts were driving history.

In the first half of the 12th century, the Anjou's immediate enemy was Étienne of Blois (Stephen of England), who pretended to the throne of Normandy and England. Count Geoffrey of Anjou married Mathilde, granddaughter of William the Conqueror, and supported her in her fight for the throne of Normandy and England. At the end of the 1140s, Normandy accepted Geoffrey's control, and in 1154, the throne of England also became Anjou's under his son Henry. The Plantagenet dynasty was born, named after Geoffrey's nickname Plantagenêt (probably meaning "broom-bearer").

The second half of the 12th century was consumed with feuds with the House of Capet, the French royal family. Henry (Henry II, King of England) married Eleanor of Aquitaine, Duchess of Aquitaine, and the House of Anjou's territory expanded vastly from the northern foothills of the Pyrenees to Normandy. The Capetian royal policy towards this territory continued relentlessly under two generations of Louis VII and Philip II, until finally, in 1204, the House of Anjou lost all of its continental territories. Later, by the Treaty of Paris in 1259, Guyenne (a dialectal pronunciation of Aquitaine, the area around Bordeaux) was restored to the Angevin territory, but in reality, the House of Anjou moved towards solidifying its identity as the English royal family.

In addition, in the 13th century, Charles, the younger brother of Louis IX of the House of Capet, and in the 14th century, Louis, the son of John II of the House of Valois, established the second and third House of Anjou in succession.

10世紀以降フランスの西部アンジューAnjou地方を領有した伯家。アンジュー家は、ロアール川の下流に北から注ぐマイエンヌ、サルト両川の中流からロアール川の南岸にかけて威勢を誇った。一族の根城はアンジェにあった。11世紀前半、フルク・ネルラ（黒いフルクの意）の代に、東のトゥレーヌに勢力を広げ、12世紀初頭、北のメーヌ伯領も併合された。こうして12世紀のアンジュー家は、北にノルマンディー、南にポアトゥー、東にブロア、西にブルターニュの諸侯伯と相対峙(たいじ)する大勢力であった。フランス王家のカペー家はまだ弱体で、これら諸侯伯の合従連衡(がっしょうれんこう)が歴史を動かしていた時代である。

　12世紀前半、アンジュー家の当面の敵は、ノルマンディー侯位・イングランド王位を僭称(せんしょう)するブロア家のエチエンヌ（イングランド王スティーブン）であった。アンジュー伯ジョフロアはウィリアム征服王の孫娘マティルドを妻とし、ノルマンディー侯位・イングランド王位に対する彼女の権利請求の戦いを支援した。1140年代の末に、ノルマンディーはジョフロアの統制を受け入れ、1154年、彼の息子アンリの代に、イングランド王位もアンジュー家のものとなった。ジョフロアのあだ名プランタジュネPlantagenêt（おそらく「エニシダを茂らせるもの」の意）をとって、プランタジネット朝アンジュー王家が誕生した。

　12世紀の後半は、フランス王家であるカペー家との確執に明け暮れた。アンリ（イングランド王ヘンリー2世）はアキテーヌ女侯アリエノールを妻としたので、アンジュー家の領土はピレネー山脈の北麓(ほくろく)からノルマンディーまで広大に展開した。この領土に対するカペー家の王権政策は、ルイ7世、フィリップ2世の2代にわたって執拗(しつよう)に続けられ、ついに1204年、アンジュー家は大陸領土をすべて失う。のち1259年のパリ条約によって、ギュイエンヌ（アキテーヌの訛音(かおん)、ボルドー周辺地域）はアンジュー家領に修復されたが、実質的にはアンジュー家は、以後イングランド王家としての個性を固める方向に向かうのである。

　なお、13世紀にはカペー家のルイ9世の弟シャルルが、14世紀にはバロア王家のジャン2世の息子ルイが、相次いで第二、第三のアンジュー家をたてている。
