However, in the same year, Echigo Prefecture and Niigata Prefecture merged to form Suibara Prefecture, and Sado Prefecture (which was renamed Aikawa Prefecture in 1871) was separated, followed by Kashiwazaki Prefecture (which had jurisdiction over five counties in the southern part of Echigo).
