Japanese: マボヤ(真海鞘) - マボヤ（英語表記）Halocynthia roretzi

An archochordate (illustration) of the family Halocynthidae in the order Ascidiaceae of the class Urichochordata. It is found from southern Hokkaido to northern Kyushu and Korea, but is particularly common in the Tohoku region, where it attaches to rocks using root-like processes. Larger specimens can reach a body length of 20 cm and a width of 10 cm. Northern specimens are covered with many thick cone-shaped projections, each of which has a tiny thorn-like protrusion at its tip, while southern specimens have a body surface divided into small polygonal regions with finger-like protrusions protruding from the center of each region. There is an inlet and outlet hole at the tip of the water tube at the front end of the body.

尾索綱ホヤ目マボヤ科の原索動物（イラスト）。北海道南部より九州北部，韓国に分布するが，とくに東北地方に多く，岩の上に根状突起で付着する。大きなものでは体長20cm，体幅10cmほどになる。北方の個体は多くの太い円錐状の突起でおおわれ，突起の先端には微細なとげ状の突起があるが，南方の個体では体表が多角形の小区域に分かれ，各区域の中央から指状突起がでている。体の前端にある水管の先端に入水孔と出水孔が開いている。
