Hanwa Line - Hanwa

Japanese:
Hanwa Line - Hanwa

The name of the track of the West Japan Railway Company. It consists of 61.3 km between Tennoji (Osaka Prefecture) and Wakayama, and 1.7 km between Otori (Osaka Prefecture) and Higashi Hagoromo (Osaka Prefecture). The entire line is DC electrified and double tracked (the branch line is electrified but single tracked). It forms an intercity link between Osaka and Wakayama in the Keihanshin area, and also serves as a link to the Kii Peninsula, where express trains that run directly to the Kisei Main Line pass through. While the parallel Nankai Electric Railway (between Namba and Wakayama City) runs closer to the coast, this line runs slightly inland. It was opened by the Hanwa Electric Railway in 1929-1930 (Showa 4-5), and competed fiercely with the existing Nankai Railway over travel time between Hanwa and the Hanwa line. In 1940, it was merged with Nankai Railway and became its Yamate Line, but in 1944 it was nationalized and called the Hanwa Line. In 1987, following the privatization of the Japanese National Railways, it became part of West Japan Railway Company. As urbanization progresses along the line, it also functions as a commuter train line for Osaka suburbs. The Kansai Airport Line branches off from Hineno, and many express and rapid trains run directly to Kansai Airport Station.
