A general term for mammals belonging to the insectivorous order, the subfamily Erinaceinae, which includes the hedgehog family. Their entire body, except for their face, underside, and limbs, is covered with spines (needle-like hairs) about 2 to 3 cm long, and they are famous for curling up their bodies into a ball and raising their spines to defend themselves when attacked by enemies such as dogs. About 10 species, including the European hedgehog Erinaceus europaeus (illustration) and the long-eared hedgehog Hemiechinus auritus , are found in Europe, Africa, and Asia, including the Korean Peninsula, but do not live in Japan.
