Since multi-valued functions do not fit within the framework of ordinary functions, if we think of the domain as overlapping with other layers, and think of each leaf as a function that takes on a different value, we can think of ordinary single-valued functions. This method was introduced by G. Riemann in the mid-19th century, so it is called a Riemann surface. 多価関数は普通の関数の枠に入らないので，定義域のほうを何重にも重なったものと考えて，各葉ごとにそれぞれの値をとる関数と考えると，普通の一価関数を考えることができる。 19世紀なかばに G.リーマンによってこの手法が導入されたのでリーマン面という。
