A typical terrestrial earthworm belonging to the family Lumbricidae of the class Oligochaeta of the phylum Annelida. It is often found under compost and food waste, which leads to the misconception that earthworms live in dirty places. They appear in kitchen sinks and bathrooms because they have the ability to move against the current of water. Some individuals reach a body length of about 18 cm, but most are usually only 10 cm. The name striped earthworm comes from the fact that each body segment has a purple-brown horizontal band in the center. However, these stripes are sometimes not clear. "Kijji" is the name given to this earthworm as fishing bait. In recent years, it has been farmed and is used in many ways, such as waste processing such as pulp and soil improvement. It is distributed not only in Japan but also widely around the world. [Masao Ohno] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
