Striped earthworm - Striped earthworm

A typical terrestrial earthworm belonging to the family Lumbricidae of the class Oligochaeta of the phylum Annelida. It is often found under compost and food waste, which leads to the misconception that earthworms live in dirty places. They appear in kitchen sinks and bathrooms because they have the ability to move against the current of water. Some individuals reach a body length of about 18 cm, but most are usually only 10 cm. The name striped earthworm comes from the fact that each body segment has a purple-brown horizontal band in the center. However, these stripes are sometimes not clear. "Kijji" is the name given to this earthworm as fishing bait. In recent years, it has been farmed and is used in many ways, such as waste processing such as pulp and soil improvement. It is distributed not only in Japan but also widely around the world.

環形動物門貧毛綱ツリミミズ科に属する代表的な陸生ミミズ。堆肥(たいひ)や生ごみの下などにも多いため、ミミズが汚い所にすむという誤解の原因をつくっている。台所の流し口や浴室に姿をみせるのは、水流に逆らって進む性質があるためである。体長18センチメートルくらいに達する個体もあるが、普通10センチメートルどまりのものが多い。シマミミズの名は、各体節中央に紫褐色の横帯があることによる。しかし、この縞(しま)ははっきりしない場合もある。キジというのは、このミミズの釣り餌(え)としての名称。最近は養殖も盛んとなり、パルプなどの廃棄物処理、土壌改良など多方面に利用されている。日本だけでなく、世界各地に広く分布する。
