Standard generalized markup language. One of the conventions for digitizing documents. Announced in 1985 by Charles Goldfarb of IBM and others, it became an international standard through the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It specifies the logical and semantic structure of a document by embedding simple commands (tags) into the document, regardless of the type of computer, operating system (OS), or software. For example, a person's name would be specified as <PERSON>name</PERSON>, and these tags would be used later when creating a person name index. World Wide Web SGML is the parent of HTML, which creates homepages on the WWW, and XML, which is its extension.
