Subsidiary body of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. Abbreviation: ECAFE.
Founded in 1947, ESCAP aims to promote economic development and cooperation among the Asian and Far East countries, and is made up of 32 countries, including 27 from within the region and five from outside the region: France, the Netherlands, the Soviet Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Other associate member countries include Hong Kong, Brunei, and New Guinea. Its headquarters are in Bangkok, Thailand, and Japan joined in 1954. At the 30th General Assembly in 1974, the name was changed to ESCAP (Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific). As of 1997, ESCAP is made up of 47 countries from within the region, four from outside the region: the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and the Netherlands, and other associate member countries and regions.

1947年に設立。アジア極東諸国の経済発展と経済協力の促進を目的とし，域内27か国，域外のフランス・オランダ・ソ連・アメリカ・イギリスの５か国，計32か国で構成された。そのほか，準加盟国として香港・ブルネイ・ニューギニアなど。本部はタイのバンコクに置かれ，日本は1954年に加盟。1974年の第30回総会で，名称はESCAP (エスカツプ) （Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacificアジア太平洋経済社会委員会）に変更された。1997年現在，ESCAPは域内47か国，域外ではアメリカ・イギリス・フランス・オランダの４か国，その他準加盟国・地域で構成される。
