…A distinction is made between (1) simple psalms, (2) responsorial psalms, and (3) antiphonal psalms. The melodic form is called the "psalm mode" (tonus psalmorum), which consists of an introduction, a middle hold, a middle final, and a hold before a variable final. Eight modes are distinguished according to the church modes, with a special type of final and one exception in which the middle hold changes between the first and second halves.
