A general term for fossil plants found in the Pleistocene (Pleistocene) fossil lake deposits distributed in Shiobara Town, Nasu County, Tochigi Prefecture. In 1940, Endo Seido revealed almost the entire structure. Most of the fossils are deciduous broadleaf angiosperms, including alder, birch, hornbeam, beech, rowan, maple, and linden. The majority of the fossil species are the same as those that grow around the area today, and more than 100 species have been identified to date. Endo thought that the Shiobara flora grew in a climate with an annual average temperature 5 to 5.5 degrees Celsius lower than today, but recent research has shown that the temperature when the Shiobara flora flourished was not much different from today.
