Name of the head of the Sugano school of Icchu-bushi. (1) First generation (1756-1823, Horeki 6-Bunsei 6). Formerly known as Yamahiko Shinjiro III. A shamisen player of Kato-bushi, he formed the Sugano Joyu school around the end of the Bunka era (1804-18) by joining the fifth Miyako Tayu Icchu. He worked to revive old songs and composed nearly 40 new pieces. (2) Second generation (1784-1841, Tenmei 4-Tenpo 12). Son of the first generation. Formerly known as Yamahiko Bunjiro. Succeeded the second generation in 1823 (Bunsei 6). In 1839 (Tenpo 10), he split off from the Miyako school and established the Sugano school. (3) Fourth generation (1842-1919, Tenpo 13-Taisho 8). 一中節菅野派の家元名。(1)初世(1756‐1823∥宝暦6‐文政6) 前名3世山彦新次郎。河東節の三味線方であったが,5世都太夫一中と結んで文化(1804‐18)末ごろ菅野序遊となり,古曲の復活につとめるとともに40曲近い新作を作曲した。(2)2世(1784‐1841∥天明4‐天保12) 初世の子。前名山彦文次郎。1823年(文政6)2世をつぐ。39年(天保10)都派から分かれて菅野派を立てた。(3)4世(1842‐1919∥天保13‐大正8) 吉原の茶屋桐屋五兵衛の子藤次郎。
