Balakirev
Russian composer, pianist, and conductor. Also known as Balakirev. A central figure in the Russian National School (The Five). Born in Nizhny Novgorod, he studied piano from an early age. In 1855, he went to St. Petersburg and became acquainted with Glinka, and the following year made his debut in St. Petersburg as a pianist and composer. In 1861, Rimsky-Korsakov and Borodin joined the group of musicians around him, forming the Russian National School. In 1862, he established a free music school, and published a collection of folk songs he had collected in the Volga River basin as "Russian Folk Songs" (1866). In 1867, he became the conductor of the Russian Musical Society, but was dismissed two years later and left the music world. After ten years of seclusion, he returned in 1879, but had already lost his influence and was unable to achieve success as a composer. ロシアの作曲家,ピアノ奏者,指揮者。バラキレフとも。ロシア国民楽派(五人組)の中心人物。ニジニ・ノブゴロドに生まれ,早くからピアノを学ぶ。1855年ペテルブルグに出てグリンカの知遇を得,翌年ピアノ奏者,作曲家としてペテルブルグでデビュー。その周囲に集う音楽家仲間に1861年リムスキー・コルサコフとボロジンが加わり,ロシア国民楽派が形成された。1862年には無料音楽学校を設立し,またボルガ川流域で採集した民謡を《ロシア民謡集》(1866年)として出版。1867年ロシア音楽協会の指揮者に就任するが2年後に解任され,音楽界を去る。10年間の隠遁(いんとん)生活ののち1879年に復帰するが,すでに影響力を失い,作曲家としては大成せずに終わった。作品に,難曲として知られるピアノ曲《イスメライ》(1869年),交響詩《タマーラ》(1867年−1882年)など。→ムソルグスキー
