"The Battle of Fujito" - Kaba no Kanja Fujito no Kassen

[Toyotakeza era]
In 1726, he collaborated with Nishizawa Ippū and Yasuda Kaerubun on "The Tale of Hojo Tokiyori," which was a huge hit with a nine-month run. After that, he replaced Ippū as the lead playwright at the Toyotake Theater, and by 1732, with Kaerubun as the supporting playwright, he had written 14 plays. Although this was a period of study, notable works include "The Fifteenth Stage of the Seiwa Genji" (1727), a precursor to "Yoshitsune Senbonzakura," "The Battle of Fujito" (1730), "The Golden Tanzaku of Chushingura" (1732), a precursor to "Kanadehon Chushingura," the hit work "The Sacrifice of Nagare in Settsu Province" (1727), and "The Thirteen Bells of Nara" (1728), which depicts a dark view of fate. From 1733 to 1735, he wrote six plays, including solo works and corrections, with his disciple Namiki Jōsuke as the supporting playwright.
