A town in Nishitsugaru District, western Aomori Prefecture. It faces the Sea of Japan to the north and borders Akita Prefecture to the south. The central settlement, through which the Gono Line passes, was the port of the Tsugaru Domain during the Edo period, shipping out Tsugaru rice and thriving on the westward shipping route to Osaka and Edo, but today it is merely one part of the district's center. Field crops and orchards spread across the hills at the foot of Mt. Iwaki. In 1993, the Shirakami Mountains were added to the list of natural heritage sites under the World Heritage Convention. The town suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 343.08 km2 . 11,449 people (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
