Palm civet

Japanese: パームシベット - ぱーむしべっと（英語表記）palm civet

A general term for a mammal of the order Carnivora, family Viverridae, subfamily Paradoxurinae, with a body shape similar to that of a weasel, but with a pointed snout and long tail. There are five genera and six species in southern Asia, one genus and one species of the Nanjinia (tree civet) in Africa, and the palm civet known in Japan is also included in the palm civet. The Binturong is also included in the taxonomic classification, but is not usually called a palm civet. Body length is 43-100 cm, tail length 40-66 cm, weight 1.5-5 kg.

体型はイタチ類に似るが，吻（ふん）がとがり，尾が長い食肉目ジャコウネコ科パームシベット亜科Paradoxurinaeの哺乳類の総称。アジア南部に5属6種，アフリカにナンジニア(キノボリジャコウネコ)1属1種があり，日本で知られるハクビシンもパームシベットに含まれる。また，ビンツロングも分類学的には含まれるが，通常パームシベットとは呼ばない。体長43～100cm，尾長40～66cm，体重1.5～5kg。
