Paradoxical Treatise for the Students of Aristotle

…He was born as a farmer's son near the small city of Digne in southern France, and became the rector of the church there and a professor of mathematics at the Royal Institute of Paris (now the Collège de France) before dying in Paris. In 1624, he published his first work, Paradoxical Treatise Against Aristotle's Students, in which he attacked Aristotelian philosophy from a skeptical standpoint. This attitude of denial of metaphysics and omnipotence of reason became the basis of his thought for a long time, and in 1642 he debated with Descartes over Descartes' Meditations, and also influenced Locke, the founder of empiricism. From around 1626, he turned his attention to the theory of Epicurus, which had long been taboo, as the best hypothesis for explaining the world and human beings, and wrote the large work Collected Philosophies (1659) and other works, attempting to harmonize this with Christianity. …
