Adam de la Halle

A French troubadour (minstrel) who lived from around 1235 to around 1288. Some say he lived until after 1306. He was from the bourgeoisie of Arras, a commercial and industrial city in northern France that at the time boasted a cultural level comparable to that of Paris. He was also called Adam le Bossu (Adan the Hunchback), but this did not indicate a physical disability. He left a major mark on the history of theater not only as a poet and composer, but also as a playwright. His representative works include Plays in the Shade of Leaves, set in Arras and featuring both satire and fantasy, and Plays of Robin and Marion, a pastoral musical drama thought to have been written in the camp of Count Artois during the Sicilian campaign. Both are considered masterpieces of medieval comedy.

フランスのトルベール(吟遊詩人)。1306年以後まで存命とする説もある。当時パリに比肩するほどの文化水準を誇っていた北フランスの商工業都市アラスの市民階級の出身。アダン･ル･ボッシュAdam le Bossu(せむしのアダン)とも呼ばれたが，これは別に身体障害を示すものではない。作詩･作曲ばかりでなく，劇作者としても演劇史上大きな足跡を残した。代表作としては，アラスを舞台とし，風刺劇と夢幻劇の両面を備えた《葉陰の劇》，シチリア遠征のアルトア伯の陣中で作ったと思われる牧歌風音楽劇《ロバンとマリオンの劇》があり，ともに中世喜劇の傑作とされる。
