A French troubadour (minstrel) who lived from around 1235 to around 1288. Some say he lived until after 1306. He was from the bourgeoisie of Arras, a commercial and industrial city in northern France that at the time boasted a cultural level comparable to that of Paris. He was also called Adam le Bossu (Adan the Hunchback), but this did not indicate a physical disability. He left a major mark on the history of theater not only as a poet and composer, but also as a playwright. His representative works include Plays in the Shade of Leaves, set in Arras and featuring both satire and fantasy, and Plays of Robin and Marion, a pastoral musical drama thought to have been written in the camp of Count Artois during the Sicilian campaign. Both are considered masterpieces of medieval comedy. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
