It does not refer to a specific insect, but is a general term for insects that cling to the area around human eyes, most of which are small flies. The two most common species in Japan are the black-eyed fly Cryptochaetum grandicorne (family Parasitidae), which clings persistently to the eyes inside and outside forests in early spring, and the spotted fly Amiota variegata (family Drosophilidae), which is also common in forests. It is said that they fly into the eyes to lick tears. The spotted fly is a vector for Thelazia callipaeda , a type of nematode that parasitizes the eyes of dogs.

特定の昆虫を指すのではなく，人間の眼のまわりにまとわりつく昆虫の総称で，小型のハエが多い。日本での代表的な種は，春先に森林の内外でしつこく眼にまとわりつくクロメマトイCryptochaetum grandicorne(カイガラヤドリバエ科)，同じく森林内に多いマダラメマトイAmiota variegata(ショウジョウバエ科)の2種である。眼に飛来するのは涙をなめるためといわれている。マダラメマトイは，イヌの眼に寄生するセンチュウ(線虫)の一種トウヨウガンチュウ(東洋眼虫)Thelazia callipaedaの媒介者である。
