Bytownite

One of six types of plagioclase. Chemically, it is a mineral defined by the ratio of albite and anorthite. However, in mineralogy, it is not currently recognized as an independent species, and is classified as anorthite. It cannot be distinguished from other plagioclase with the naked eye, but it can be distinguished to some extent by its occurrence. It occurs as a phenocryst in basalt in gabbro, anorthosite, and metamorphic rocks belonging to the pyroxene hornfels or granulite facies. Its English name comes from Bytown, a place name near Ottawa, Canada, and its Japanese name comes from its chemical composition.

斜長石を6種に細分したときの1種。化学組成上、曹長(そうちょう)石と灰長石成分の割合で定義される鉱物。しかし、現在鉱物学上は独立種としては認められておらず、灰長石に分類される。肉眼で他の斜長石との識別は不可能であるが、産状による識別がある程度有効である。玄武岩の斑晶(はんしょう)として、斑糲(はんれい)岩、アノーソサイト（斜長岩）、輝石ホルンフェルス相ないしグラニュライト相に属する変成岩中に産する。英名は、カナダ、オタワ付近の地名バイタウンBytownに由来し、和名は化学組成による。
