George Babcock Cressey
1896‐1963
American geographer. Born in Ohio to a pastor's family. Originally a geology major, he earned a doctorate in research on sand dunes and deserts, making him a well-rounded geographer, particularly known as a researcher of China and the Soviet Union. In 1923, he traveled to China, where he continued research and teaching in Beiping (Beijing) and Shanghai. He returned to the United States in 1929, and his subsequent research on the Ordos Desert is well known. He was appointed professor at Syracuse University, and was also president of the Association of American Geographers and the International Union of Geographers (IGU), making him a highly successful scholar.

アメリカの地理学者。オハイオ州で牧師の家に生まれた。元来は地質学の出身であるが,砂丘や砂漠の研究で学位を得た幅の広い地理学者で,特に中国やソ連の研究者としても知られている。1923年に中国に渡り,北平(北京)や上海で研究や教授を続けた。29年に帰国しその後発表したオルドス砂漠の研究はよく知られている。シラキュース大学の教授に迎えられたり,アメリカ地理学会の会長,国際地理学会(IGU)の会長も務めるなど大いに活躍した。
