A thin gas-filled pouch found on the dorsal surface of the digestive tract of bony fish. It is not found in cyclostomes or cartilaginous fish. It is a bulge in the wall of the anterior part of the digestive tract and is homologous to the lung. In lungfish, the inside is reticulated and functions similarly to the lung. In some fish, such as salmonids and cyprinidae, it is connected to the digestive tract and allows air to enter and leave through it to regulate the body's specific gravity. However, in many fish, this connection is severed early in development, and the specific gravity is regulated by secreting carbon dioxide and oxygen from the red gland inside and absorbing gases in the oval gland.

硬骨魚類の消化管の背面にみられる気体の入った薄い嚢。円口類や軟骨魚類にはない。消化管の前方部の壁がふくらんだもので，肺と相同。肺魚類では内部が網状で肺と同様な働きをする。サケ科やコイ科など一部の魚類では，消化管とつながっていて，そこから空気を出入させて体の比重を調節する。しかし，多くの魚類では発生の初期に連絡は断たれ，内部にある赤腺から二酸化炭素や酸素を分泌し，卵円腺でガスを吸収することによって比重を調節する。
