A critical and active minority in the Soviet Union since the Brezhnev era. Originally a term referring to people who disagreed with the dominant church and faith, the term came to be used in Western Europe to refer to critics of the Soviet Union, and was then adopted by those involved. The dissenters emerged from the movement to thoroughly criticize Stalin in the 1960s. Already in the early 1960s, they began disseminating their views through typed copies (samizdat), holding reading sessions in squares, and publishing their works abroad.
