A deciduous shrub of the Euphorbiaceae family, used for cut flowers and as a garden tree, with beautiful bright red young shoots when they first sprout. It is sometimes mistakenly called Mallotus japonicus by florists, but this is a different species. The alternate cordate to circular-cordate leaves are red when young, but later turn green. The petioles are long and have serrated edges. They flower in spring, and although both sexes are monoecious, they produce small spike-like flowers in different inflorescences. Native to southeastern mainland China, in Japan they are cultivated outdoors in warm areas west of the Kanto region. They tend to produce adventitious buds from the roots, and can multiply rapidly to form clumps. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
