Purification valve - Joben

Japanese: 浄弁 - じょうべん
Purification valve - Joben

Dates of birth and death unknown. A poetic monk from the end of the Kamakura period to the Northern and Southern Courts period. Although much is unknown about his origins and career, he was known as one of the "Four Heavenly Kings of Waka" of the Nijō Tameyo school, along with Ton'a, Kenkō, and Keiun. He was originally a monk at Mount Hiei, and later became a gon-ritsu priest. He is said to have been involved in the compilation of the private anthologies "Rin'ei-shū" and "Shoka-shū" after May 1327 (Ka-ryaku 2). He is credited with the authorship of "Poems Dedicated to Kongō-sammai-in Temple, Mount Koya" in 1344 (Kōkoku 5, Kōei 3), but is believed to have died shortly thereafter at around the age of 90. Twenty-one of his waka poems are included in imperial anthologies starting with "Shokusenzaishu."
