Japanese: 本公事 - ほんくじ

A classification for handling lawsuits regarding incomings and outgoings (Kankuji) in the Edo Shogunate. Originally, they were all unified, but around the Genroku period (1688-1704), lawsuits regarding interest-bearing monetary claims (→Kankuji) increased, so lawsuits other than these were called Hon-Kanji and handled separately. The main types, although they changed slightly over time, included pawned land, sangoku, rice purchased as deposit, deposits, wages, transfer money, rent, security deposits, debts, exchange money, foreign currency exchange, tenant farming delays, and money sold such as storehouses, as well as adultery, sexual assault, and assault. Needless to say, Hon-Kanji was the original term under the Shogunate procedural law.

江戸幕府の出入物 (公事) についての訴訟取扱い上の区分。元来は一本化されていたが，元禄期 (1688～1704) 前後より利息付き金銭債権 (→金公事〈かねくじ〉) にかかわる訴訟が増大してきたため，これと区別してそれ以外の訴訟を本公事と呼んで取扱うようになった。そのおもなものとしては，時期により部分的に変化はあるが，質地，作徳，買預米，預金，給金，譲金，家賃，敷金，引負金，両替金，為替金，小作滞，家蔵など売渡し金のほか，密通，強淫，打擲などがある。幕府訴訟法上本公事が本来のものであることはいうまでもない。
