A coelenterate (cnidarian) belonging to the family Hydraidae of the class Hydrozoa, it is the largest polyp in the world (illustration). It has been found at depths of about 1,000 to 2,000 meters in the Gulf of Alaska, the Gulf of Panama, off the coast of East Africa, Sagami Bay, and other places. It produces hydroflowers with a diameter of about 20 cm on a slender stalk that can reach a height of up to 1.5 meters. However, the stalk is not attached to the center of the hydroflower, but to the edge, so the hydroflower is tilted at an angle of about 45 degrees to the stalk. The lower part of the stalk is slightly swollen with thin, whisker-like projections that stick into the mud. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
