A large river in southern Africa. It has a total length of 2,736 km and a drainage area of 1.33 million ^km2 . It originates in the northwestern tip of Zambia and flows south, then turns east and flows along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, crossing Mozambique and emptying into the Indian Ocean. It is an important inland waterway, including its tributaries, the Kafue River, the Luangwa River, and the Shire River, but navigable sections are cut off by rapids and waterfalls. It also has great potential for hydroelectric power generation, with the Kariba Dam and Victoria Falls in the midstream. The Monomotapa Kingdom flourished along the southern bank. The midstream was explored by Livingstone.

アフリカ南部の大河。全長2736km，流域面積133万km²。ザンビアの北西端に発し南流，東に転じザンビアとジンバブエの境界を流れ，モザンビークを横断してインド洋に注ぐ。支流のカフエ川，ルアングワ川，シレ川などを含め，内陸水路として重要であるが，急流や滝のため可航部分は分断されている。水力発電の可能性も大きく，中流部にカリバ・ダム，ビクトリア滝がある。南岸一帯にはモノモタパ王国が栄えた。中流部はリビングストンによって探検された。
