Younger brother

Japanese film. Directed by Ichikawa Kon in 1960. Based on the novel by Koda Aya. Gen (Kishi Keiko, 1932-) lives with her younger brother Hekirou (Kawaguchi Hiroshi, 1936-1987), their father, a writer (Mori Masayuki), and their disabled stepmother (Tanaka Kinuyo). Gen treats Hekirou with love, even though he has a hard time dealing with him, as he has become a delinquent. However, Hekirou falls ill and, despite Gen's efforts at nursing him, dies. The film expresses the deep relationship of trust between an older sister who must play the role of both father and mother, and her younger brother who relies on her. For example, the intensity of a fight scene between the brother and sister makes you feel the depth of their bond all the more. Ichikawa has made many adaptations of literary works into films, and this is one of his most representative. Although this work is in color, the colors are subdued, creating a unique atmosphere.

日本映画。1960年（昭和35）、市川崑(いちかわこん)監督。原作は幸田文(こうだあや)。げん（岸恵子(きしけいこ)、1932―　）は、弟の碧郎(へきろう)（川口浩(かわぐちひろし)、1936―1987）、作家の父（森雅之）、体の不自由な継母（田中絹代）と暮らしている。不良になってしまった碧郎に対して、げんは手を焼きながらも愛情をもって接する。だが碧郎は病に倒れ、げんの看病もむなしくその命を落とす。父と母の両方の役割を果たさなければいけない姉と、その姉に甘える弟との深い信頼関係が表現されており、たとえば姉弟の取っ組み合い喧嘩(けんか)の場面は、その激しさゆえにかえって二人の絆の深さを感じさせる。市川の監督作には文芸作品の映画化が少なくないが、そのなかでも代表的な一本。また、本作はカラー作品でありながらも発色が抑えられており、独特の雰囲気を醸し出している。
