Ilorin (English spelling)

Japanese: イロリン(英語表記)Ilorin
Ilorin (English spelling)
A city in southwestern Nigeria. Located about 260 km north-northeast of Lagos. Founded by the Yoruba people at the end of the 18th century, it was the capital of the Yoruba Kingdom, a vassal state of the Oyo Empire. In 1817, with the support of Chief Alimi of Sokoto, it rebelled against Oyo and achieved independence, with Alimi's son becoming chief. It flourished as a trade center between the north and south, and was incorporated into the British protectorate of northern Nigeria in 1900. Most of the residents are Yoruba. Located on the railway line connecting the north and south, it is a distribution center for cassava, corn, millet, rice, cotton, and livestock, and has a modern sugar factory as well as handicrafts such as leatherwork, pottery, and dyeing. Historical buildings such as the chief's castle and a mosque remain. Population: 420,000 (1991 estimate).
