A coastal shrub of the Verbenaceae family (APG classification: Lamiaceae). The trunk is an underground stem that runs horizontally in the sand or on the surface, and the branches are upright and 20 to 50 cm tall. The leaves have an unpleasant odor, are ovate to elliptical, 2 to 6 cm long, entire, and rounded or bluntly pointed at the tip. The upper surface is gray-green, and the underside is gray-white with dense fine hairs. From July to September, a panicle-shaped inflorescence 2 to 10 cm long blooms at the terminal, and funnel-shaped, bluish-purple flowers 1 to 1.5 cm long bloom. The fruit is spherical, 5 to 7 mm in diameter, and the lower half is enclosed by persistent calyx. It is distributed from Honshu to Okinawa, and from the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, and China to the tropical regions of Asia and Africa, and Australia. It is often planted for erosion control. The closely related Yaeyama Hamago is distributed in Asia, Africa, and Europe, with the Yaeyama Islands as its northern limit.
