Ryo no Gige - Ryo no Gige

This is an official commentary on the Yoro Code. It consists of 10 volumes and 30 chapters. Based on a suggestion made by Doctor of Law Nukata Imataris in 826 (Tencho 3), 12 people including Minister of the Right Kiyohara Natsuno began compiling it in 829 by order of Emperor Junna. It was completed in 833 and was put into effect the following year as an official interpretation of the Yoro Code, with regulatory power equivalent to the text of the Code itself. Japan's Codes were created with reference to Chinese codes, but various doubts arose in their implementation, and differences in interpretation meant that those in charge of politics were often unsure of how to handle the code. Therefore, this book was created to set standards for official interpretation. Today, the text of the Yoro Code is no longer available in its original form, but this book allows us to learn about it. However, since the two sections on the Warehouse Act and Medical Act are missing, a collection of fragments has been used for these parts.

養老(ようろう)令の公定注釈書。10巻30編。826年（天長3）の明法博士(みょうぼうはかせ)額田今足(ぬかだのいまたり)の建議に基づき、829年から右大臣清原夏野(きよはらなつの)ら12人が淳和(じゅんな)天皇の命によって編纂(へんさん)にあたり、833年に完成、その翌年に養老令の公権的な解釈として施行され、令の本文に準ずる規制力をもった。日本の令は中国の令を参考にしてできあがったものであるが、実施にあたりいろいろな疑義が生まれ、解釈の相違もあって、実際の政治担当者としては処置に迷うことが多かった。そこで、公的な解釈の規準を設けるためにこの書がつくられたのである。今日、養老令の本文は本来の令の形では伝わらないが、本書によってその本文を知ることができる。ただし、倉庫令、医疾令の2編が欠けているので、これらの部分は逸文を集めたものが利用されている。『国史大系』所収。
