Ayama [town] - Ayama
A former town in Ayama District, northwest of Mie Prefecture. Most of the area is mountainous. Rice and livestock farming are practiced, with a particular focus on beef cattle and pigs. Iga ware is a specialty of the town. In November 2004, it merged with Ueno City, Aoyama Town in Naga District, Iga Town in Ayama District, Oyamada Village, and Shimagahara Village to become Iga City. Area: 72.97 km2. Population: 8,271 (2003).
