Russian painter. Born in Cherepovets, Novgorod Oblast. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, he studied in Paris. He traveled throughout Russia, Western Europe, Syria, Palestine, India, Japan, and the United States. When he came to Japan, he visited Nikko and left sketches. He participated in the Russo-Turkish War and the Russo-Japanese War, and shared the fate of the battleship Petropavlovsk when it sank in Port Arthur. He produced many war paintings, such as "The Turkestan War" (1867-73) and "The Balkan War" (1878-81), and stated his position by saying, "As a painter, I condemn war with all my might." His representative work, "The Consequences of War" (1872, both in the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow), depicts a pile of skulls on a battlefield, and bears the inscription, "Dedicated to all conquerors, past, present and future." It can be said that he established war paintings that were different from traditional historical paintings.
