...This method is still used in modern records, and emphasis characteristics are indicated by the RIAA curve established by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Record materials have also been improved, from hard rubber to shellac, which was often used for standard playing records (SP records), and from around 1948, vinyl chloride was used for long playing records (LP records). The use of vinyl chloride in particular has significantly reduced the scratch noise caused by the needle rubbing against the record.
