A worker engaged in salt production at a salt field. At upland salt fields and inlet salt fields, the work involved pumping up seawater, spreading sand to make the salt adhere, and collecting it, which was hard work. At inlet salt fields, about 10 salt workers were employed per hectare, and they were called master carpenters, upper salt workers, workers, cookers, etc. depending on their skill. However, from around 1953, they began to be replaced by run-down salt fields, which did not require the labor of salt workers, and in 1959, with the third salt industry reorganization, all salt workers became run-down salt fields, and they disappeared.
