Appianos - Appianos (English spelling)

Date of birth and death unknown. A Greek historian from the 2nd century AD in ancient Rome. Born in Alexandria, Egypt. After serving as a city official in his hometown, he was granted Roman citizenship and knighthood and moved to Rome. He worked as a lawyer in court, and was recommended by Fronto, the teacher of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, to become administrator of the imperial province. In his later years, he wrote the 24-volume History of Rome, which focuses on war. Of these, over 12 volumes remain, and they are important historical documents of the civil wars at the end of the Republic.

生没年不詳。古代ローマ、2世紀のギリシア人歴史家。エジプトのアレクサンドリア出身。出身市の都市官職を務めたのち、ローマ市民権と騎士身分を与えられ、ローマ市に移住した。法廷で弁護人として活動し、皇帝マルクス・アウレリウスの師フロントーの推薦で皇帝領属州の管理官の地位を得た。晩年に、戦争中心の24巻の『ローマ史』を著した。そのうち、12巻余りが残っており、共和政末期の内乱の史料として重要である。
