...After these artists, Helen Bannerman (1863-1946), who created "Little Black Sambo" (1899), and B. Potter, who published "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" (1902), were active at the turn of the century, followed by A. Rackham, E. Dulac, and K. Nielsen, who had a somewhat highbrow luxury, under the influence of fin de siècle art. After that, through Leslie Brooke (1862-1940), who played with children, we entered the era of the modern woodblock artist William Nicholson (1872-1949), Edward Ardizzone, who was a simple pen and watercolor artist, and Kathleen Hale, who was good with crayons. Of particular note in the UK is the beautifully offset-printed Puffin Picture Book series, a groundbreaking series of inexpensive picture books inspired by Soviet picture books, which are worthy of mention for their sophisticated editing, printing and illustration style.

From [Nicholson]

...A leading British abstract painter. Born in Denham, Buckinghamshire. His father, William N. (1872-1949), was also a famous painter. After dropping out of the Slade School of Fine Art in London in 1911, he studied in Tours, Milan, and Pasadena, and was decisively influenced by the cubist works of Picasso and Braque in Paris. He also resonated with Mondrian's ideas on form, and in 1933 he produced a relief consisting only of circles and squares, and participated in the group exhibition "Abstraction-Création" in Paris in the same year.
