India Office

India Office
An office established for the British colonial administration of India. When the direct rule of the British King began in 1858, it was launched as one of the administrative departments. It was headed by the Secretary of State for India and handled administrative affairs in the home country. The India Council was established under it as a deliberative body with the power to restrict the actions of the Secretary of State for India. The expenses of the India Office and the Council were borne by the colony. There was no significant change in the role of the India Office after that, but in 1919, the expenses related to the administration of India began to be borne by the home country, the composition and power of the Council was reduced, and the power of the Minister was also revised. In addition, a High Commissioner for India was established in the UK, and the duties of the Indian Government's representative in the home country were transferred to him. The Council was dissolved by the "Government Act" of 1935, and the power of the Minister was also reduced. This continued until the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947.
