Japanese: 蛤の草紙 - はまぐりのそうし

Otogi-zoshi. One of the Shibukawa versions. Shijira, from Tenjiku Makada country, was fishing to support his mother, and one day he caught a beautiful clam. It suddenly grew in size in the boat, splitting in two, revealing a beautiful wife of 17-18 years old. Shijira makes the excuse that he will not have a wife until he is 40 years old in order to show his filial piety to his mother, but Shijira is persuaded and the wife and Shijira become husband and wife. The woman seeks hemp, spindles, and needles to spin, and seeks a loom to start weaving, when two strangers arrive and help her weave.

御伽草子。渋川版の一つ。天竺摩訶陀（てんじくまかだ）国の〈しじら〉は釣りをして母を養っていたが，ある日美しい蛤を一つ釣りあげた。それは船の中でにわかに大きくなり，二つに開いて，中から17～18歳の容顔美麗な女房が現れる。40歳になるまで女房を持たないのも母へ孝養を尽くすためと言い訳する〈しじら〉を説きふせて，女房と〈しじら〉とは夫婦になる。女が麻と錘（つむ）と〈てがい〉を求めて紡ぎ，機（はた）を求めて織りはじめると，見知らぬ者が2人来て，ともに織るのを手伝う。
