Emperor Wenxuan (English: Emperor Wenxuan)

The first emperor of the Chinese dynasty of Qi (Northern Qi). Reigned 550-559. His given name was Gao Yang. He was the second son of Gao Huan. He was initially tasked with monitoring the Eastern Wei court as the Grand Commander of the Capital, but when his brother Gao Cheng was killed, he hurried to Jinyang (Taiyuan) and took control of the military, then took over the Eastern Wei government and established the Northern Qi dynasty. He favored the Han aristocrat Yang Yin and others, while at the same time oppressing meritorious retainers since the founding of the state, and tried to make the imperial power absolute. However, he was addicted to alcohol and sex and often committed violent acts, and he died without achieving his goal of subjugating the Western Wei. [Tanigawa Michio]

中国，斉(北斉)の初代皇帝。在位550‐559年。姓名は高洋。高歓の次子。はじめ京畿大都督として東魏朝廷を監視する任にあったが，兄の高澄が殺されると急きょ晋陽(太原)に赴いて軍を掌握，ついで東魏政権を奪って北斉朝を建てた。漢人貴族楊愔（よういん）らを重用し，一方建国以来の功臣を弾圧して帝権の絶対化を図ったが，酒色に耽って粗暴な行為が多く，西魏併呑の志を果たしえないままに没した。【谷川道雄】
