The largest British trading company based in Hong Kong and involved in trade with China. Its Chinese name is also written as Yee Ho Trading Co., Ltd. or Sadian Trading Co., Ltd. Scotsmen W. Jardine and J. Matheson established Yee Ho Trading Co., Ltd. in Macau in 1832 (the 12th year of the Daoguang Era) and engaged in opium and tea trade. With the abolition of the East India Company's monopoly on trade with China and the Opium Wars, the company expanded into Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Shanghai, and also opened a branch in Yokohama in 1959. After the bankruptcy of Dent & Co., it became the largest trading company in the Far East. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
